Acting Through Song helps singers transform technically prepared songs into truthful, specific scenes with music. Through lyric analysis, character work, individual coaching, and performance practice, students will learn to communicate a clear story while maintaining confident, healthy singing.
In Acting Through Song, students will learn to approach every song as a dramatic event rather than simply a vocal performance. They will explore given circumstances, relationships, objectives, obstacles, stakes, tactics, beats, lyric subtext, and dramatic journeys before applying those discoveries through individual coaching, partner exercises, rehearsal experiments, and performance. Students will develop the ability to connect vocal and physical choices to the same story, sing to a specific real or imagined scene partner, respond productively to direction, and rehearse their repertoire with greater independence. Each student will work on several contrasting, age-appropriate musical theatre selections and track how their interpretation develops throughout the program. The class will culminate in a story-first cabaret or invited studio sharing that places the emphasis on specific, connected performance rather than elaborate staging.
